Discover Our Mission
The Banned Books Initiative is a youth-led 501(c)(3) founded by a family of book enthusiasts committed to literacy, free speech, and the power of storytelling. We raise awareness about banned books worldwide and defend intellectual freedom so every young person can access diverse ideas—even those some consider controversial or challenging.
We believe access to knowledge protects democracy. Reading builds empathy and gives students the context to understand issues such as racial inequality and LGBTQ+ rights, helping them form identities grounded in truth and engage meaningfully with causes that matter.
BBI partners with teen groups, authors, libraries, and educators to turn that belief into action. We launch and support student chapters with toolkits and training, run school and library programs, host author conversations, and provide practical advocacy resources—tailored to each community.
We also believe joy fuels action—and yes, we think ice cream is the best food. We’ve paired our love of dessert with our passion for education: with every purchase on our site, we include ice cream from well-known brands. All proceeds fund our fight for “rebellious” literature (and all the ice cream goes to you).
Join us to read widely, resist censorship, and build a culture that celebrates ideas. Start a chapter, volunteer, or donate—and help protect the freedom to read while tasting the sweetness of freedom (and dessert).

ABOUT ME!
This all started when my family and I made the decision to read the top 10 most banned books in America together. The idea was inspired after hearing Rabbi Sharon Brous, one of the founders of the Jewish congregation IKAR, speak thoughtfully on the subject during Yom Kippur. Her words deeply resonated with me and ignited a passion for banned books within me. From that moment on, I felt compelled to share this love with others and to help raise awareness about the ongoing issue of book banning in schools across the country and around the world.
Building this website was a comprehensive process that involved not only designing the user experience but also managing the administrative and legal requirements single-handedly. From the initial concept to the final launch, I took on every role, including coding, content creation, and coordinating with the ice cream company to integrate our promotional offerings seamlessly.
Filing all the necessary tax documentation and obtaining 501(c)(3) status independently required meticulous attention to detail. I researched IRS regulations, completed the extensive paperwork, and ensured compliance with all federal and state guidelines. This allowed The Banned Books Initiative to operate as a legitimate nonprofit, dedicated to promoting banned books while supporting literacy and freedom of expression. Managing these tasks alone reinforced my commitment to this cause and demonstrated the practical skills needed to sustain our mission without external assistance.

ABOUT ME!
I am a dedicated and passionate student at Marlborough who is deeply committed to making a meaningful and lasting impact within my community. My genuine love for reading and learning continually fuels my strong belief that everyone deserves access to an equal and high-quality education—an education that is entirely free from censorship, restriction, and the suppression of ideas. The issues and themes addressed in many banned books poignantly reflect the fundamental challenges and enduring complexities of American society, spanning crucial topics such as social justice, identity, history, and the essential right to personal freedom. I am wholeheartedly committed to championing these vital conversations by actively raising awareness and fostering open, respectful dialogue. In my role, I manage and curate social media platforms with the goal of engaging and educating a broader, more diverse audience. Additionally, I take an active part in organizing and planning events designed to highlight the profound value of intellectual freedom and emphasize the critical importance of diverse perspectives in educational environments. ABOUT ME!
I am a student based in Los Angeles who is deeply passionate about ensuring that children like me have consistent and reliable access to critical information that profoundly shapes our understanding of equality and social justice. It feels fundamentally unfair and unjust that important books are being banned or removed from schools and libraries, as this practice restricts our ability to learn about the diverse and fundamental differences within our population. Moreover, it stifles essential and often difficult conversations about diversity, inclusion, and acceptance that are necessary for growth and empathy.
In my role as the Customer Service Manager for The Banned Books Initiative, I am committed to providing exceptional support and guidance to our community of readers, authors, and partners. I oversee all aspects of customer interactions to ensure that every inquiry, concern, or feedback is addressed promptly and professionally. By fostering positive communication and listening attentively to the needs of our customers, I help cultivate a welcoming environment that encourages continued engagement with our mission. Collaborating closely with our Executive Director, authors, and the ice cream company partner, I ensure that every book purchase and related experience reflects our dedication to defending intellectual freedom and celebrating banned books as vital tools for education and empowerment.
